Mitch Mathews

School: BYU
Position: WR
Positive: Two-year starter who posted a career-best 73 receptions for 922 yards as a junior. Senior totals included 54 receptions, 737 yards and 11 TDs. Tall, sturdy receiver with an inconsistent game. Comes back to the ball, uses his frame to shield away defenders and extends to make the reception away from his body. Displays a sense of timing, gets vertical with defenders draped on him and looks the ball into his hands. Nicely adjusts to the errant throw, displays good eye/hand coordination and plays with proper body control. Turned in a tremendous pro-day workout in which he ran 40 times under 4.45 seconds.
Negative: Lacks a quick release off the line scrimmage. Plays like a one speed receiver and does not get deep separation. Does not display naturally soft hands. Poor route runner who often rounds off breaks and gets little separation.
Analysis: Mathews is a physical specimen who was unable to capitalize off his terrific junior campaign but possesses the underlying ability to make an NFL roster if he pulls the pieces together.
