Trent Matthews

School: Colorado State
Position: S
Positive: Four-year starter who posted a career-best 79 tackles last season. Tore a knee ligament in December which required surgery to repair. Large, physically imposing safety best facing the action. Tough defending the run, explosive up the field and works to make plays on the ball handler. Displays good awareness, effective facing the action and quickly locates the pass in the air.
Negative: Struggles making plays with his back to the ball. Displayed average long speed before his knee injury. At times too quick up the field and gets caught out of position.
Analysis: Matthews looked like a top prospect after his sophomore season but watched his game level off the next two years and is now coming off a serious knee injury. He's a downhill defensive back best between the numbers and could lineup in a zone system or as a traditional strong safety if healthy.
