Jaylon Smith

School: Notre Dame
Position: OLB
Positive: Four-year starter named to numerous All-America teams last season after totaling 114 tackles, 9 tackles for loss and 1 sack while also breaking up 5 passes. Suffered a devastating knee injury during Fiesta Bowl in which he tore and ACL and MCL and also potentially injured nerves in his knee. Game impacting defensive front seven prospect with a long haul ahead of him. Incredibly athletic, fast and forceful in all areas. Shows great speed to the sidelines, cuts off the corners from ball carriers and gets depth on pass drops. Runs down opponents in the open field and has a closing burst. Plays with a nasty attitude, sells out on the blitz and causes a lot of havoc up the field. Scrapes well laterally, fluid moving in every direction and loses no momentum changing direction.
Negative: Lacks great bulk and blocked from the action by opposing tight ends. Knee injury leaves his career in doubt.
Analysis: Prior to the injury he suffered during the Fiesta Bowl, Smith was rated as my number one player in this year's draft as he displayed himself to be a complete three down linebacker effective in all areas. He offers the versatility to play in several defensive schemes and could have been and opening-day starter but it's now a wait-and-see proposition based on the injury.
