Deon Clarke

School: Virginia Tech
Position: OLB
Positive: Two-year starter who finished with a career-best 77 tackles last season after posting 11 tackles for loss and 5 sacks as a junior. Undersized but active linebacker best suited for a one gap system. Breaks down well, uses his hands to protect himself and gives effort in all areas. Displays the ability to slide off blocks, sells out on the blitz and gets terrific depth on pass drops. Covers a tremendous amount of range on the field and makes plays sideline to sideline. Stays with backs or opposing receivers down the field. Quickly changes direction or immediately alters his angle of attack, quick in all his actions and very fluid. Fast in pursuit and shows the ability to make plays in space.
Negative: Not forceful up the field. Struggles getting off blocks. Size is a limiting factor.
Analysis: Clarke is a terrific football player who lacks the measurables for the next level. He offers possibilities as a backup one gap linebacker or even as a conventional strong safety and should do well on special teams.
