Vernon Butler

School: Louisiana Tech
Position: DT
Positive: Two-year starter who posted 50 tackles, 10 tackles for loss and 3 sacks as a senior. Junior numbers included a career-best 56 tackles and 13.5 tackles for loss. Large, somewhat athletic defensive line prospect who can occupy the gaps or make plays on the ball. Consistently plays with leverage and proper pad level, explosive and shows power in his lower body. Moves well in a straight line or laterally, resilient and rarely off his feet. Quickly gets his hands up, knocks blockers back with violent punch and discards opponents to get to the action. Uses a solid combination of technique and power to beat opponents and collapse the pocket. Fires through the open gaps of the offensive line and makes a lot of plays in the backfield.
Negative: Average pass rusher. Does not display a great closing burst. Shows inefficiency and takes too many extra steps getting to the action.
Analysis: Butler is a terrific combination of size, power as well as athleticism and offers starting potential in a variety of NFL systems.
