Matthew Smalley

School: Lafayette
Position: CB
Positive: Three-year starter awarded all-Conference honors since his sophomore season as both a cornerback and special teams player. Career totals of 36 tackles and 5 INT's came during his sophomore season when he also averaged 29.6 yards on 12 kick returns with 2 scores. Small but speedy defensive back rarely challenged by opponents. Fluid flipping his hips transitioning with opponents, breaks down well and has an aggressive style. Mixes it up with receivers, quick up the field defending the run and does not back down to a challenge. Has a burst to the ball out of his plant. Plays with a nice degree of suddenness and relatively instinctive. Effectively times his pass defenses.
Negative: Not a strong run defender and more of a drag down tackler. Does not slow receivers at the line of scrimmage. Over pursues the action and takes himself from plays.
Analysis: Smalley is best in a zone system or backed off the line of scrimmage and offers possibilities as a dime back/return specialist on Sunday.
