Derron Smith

School: Fresno State
Position: S
Bio: Three-year starter awarded all-conference honors since his sophomore season. Senior totals included 93 tackles and 1 interception after 87 tackles and 7 interceptions as a junior. Struggled through his senior campaign with a sports hernia.
Positive: Tough, instinctive safety prospect with average speed. Efficient, takes good angles to the action and plays smart football. Effectively diagnoses plays, keeps the action in front of him and moves well in both a straight line or laterally. Recognizes routes in zone coverage, displays good range in centerfield and quickly closes to the ball. Aggressive and goes for the knockout blow.
Negative: Lacks great size and struggles bringing runners down at the point of attack. Does not possess great long speed.
Analysis: Smith is an intelligent and aggressive safety who gets the most from his ability and stays away from errors in judgment. Speed is a limiting factor but in the proper system he offers starting potential.
