Jameis Winston

School: Florida State
Position: QB
Bio: Two-year starter awarded the Heisman Trophy and Davey O'Brien Award in 2013. Passing totals last year included 3907 yards, 25 touchdowns and 18 interceptions. Freshman totals from 2013 included 2641 yards and 40 touchdowns. Accomplished relief pitcher.
Positive: Athletic quarterback prospect with tremendous upside potential. Scans the field, knows where his receivers are and patient in the pocket. Sees the rush, steps up to avoid defenders and keeps his eyes downfield. Stands strong against the rush, sidesteps defenders to buy extra time and finds the open receiver. Possesses a big-time arm and easily gets the ball downfield even with defenders are draped on him. Throws with terrific velocity, gets the ball through tight spots and can make all the passes. Improvises when plays breakdown and finds a way to produce. Dangerous carrying the ball and picks up big yardage with his legs. Shows good pocket awareness and a sense for what's happening.
Negative: Makes some head-scratching decisions and puts the ball up for grabs. Locks onto the primary target, misreads the defense and forces the ball into covered receivers. Throws with a narrow base, which adversely affects the way passes comes out of his hands as well as the accuracy of throws.
Analysis: Winston has the potential to be a quarterback for the ages with his ability to take over games. He possesses the necessary athletic skills to line up in a variety of systems and comes with an abundance of upside potential. That said he needs work on his throwing mechanics and defensive reads. He also needs to mature off the field. Winston could be the consummate boom-or-bust prospect; a player who can grow into a franchise quarterback or devastate a team at the next level.
