Derrick Mathews

School: Houston
Position: OLB
Bio: Four-year starter awarded All-conference honors his first three years. Played in six games last year before suffering a season-ending knee injury. Career-best 126 tackles and 17 tackles for loss came during his sophomore campaign.
Positive: Undersized, sideline-to-sideline linebacker who stands out in pursuit. Quickly changes direction, displays good range and covers a lot of ground. Stays with pass cover assignments. Fluid flipping his hips and loses nothing transitioning downfield with tight ends or running backs. Effectively makes plays in space, wraps up when tackling and shows good instincts.
Negative: Small and gets caught up in the trash or easily blocked from the action. Possesses more of a short burst of speed, which he struggles to sustain. Coming off a knee injury.
Analysis: Matthews is a run-and-chase linebacker prospect who needs a clear lane to the ball carrier. He grades high in the areas of effort and competitiveness but lacks the physical skills for the next level.
