Jalani Phillips

School: Purdue
Position: DE
Bio: Posted a career-best 34 tackles and 5.5 tackles for loss as a senior when he moved into the starting lineup on a full-time basis.
Positive: Athletic college defensive end who displayed tremendous progress last year. Plays with good pad level, a lot of quickness and easily moves about the field. Gets a lot of momentum off the snap, keeps his feet moving on contact and shows the ability to change direction then get down the line of scrimmage in pursuit of the action. Uses his hands to protect himself or get off blocks and shows the ability to make plays in space. Stays with the action and works hard.
Negative: Easily ridden from the action by a single blocker. Driven off the line on running plays and needs a free shot at the ball handler to make the play.
Analysis: Phillips comes with average size/speed numbers but has shown progress and versatility. He offers potential as a backup end in a four-man line but must show well on special teams this summer to make it out of camp.
