Troy Niklas

School: Notre Dame
Position: TE
Positive: Former outside linebacker who moved to tight end as a sophomore in 2012. Posted 32 receptions, 498 receiving yards, and 5 touchdowns last season.Developing tight end with a large amount of upside. Plays with excellent lean, effective blocking in motion and seals linebackers from the play. Stays square, and possesses next-level blocking strength. Quickly releases off the line of scrimmage into pass routes, uses his hands to separate from defenders and physically beats down opponents to come away with the catch. Displays good hand-eye coordination, makes the difficult reception with defenders draped on him and displays the ability to snatch the pass from the air.
Negative: Must learn to finish blocks. Not a true downfield threat who creates mismatches in the secondary.
Analysis: Niklas immediately showed potential at tight end after moving from linebacker then exceeded expectations last season. He offers terrific size, next level pass-catching hands, and the ability to develop into the top man on the depth chart.
