Avery Patterson

School: Oregon
Position: S
Positive: Two-year starter at safety who began his Oregon career at cornerback. Senior totals included 80 tackles, 3 INTs and 6 PBUs. Versatile, multipurpose defensive back with an underrated game. Instinctive, picks up assignments in zone coverage, and is effective facing the action. Shows good route recognition, works well with cornerbacks, but can also play over the slot receiver. Effectively positions himself against opponents to defend the throw. Shows quickness and a closing burst to the action. Keeps the action in front of him. Does not make mental errors but is also feisty and mixes it up with opponents throughout the route. Quick and aggressive moving up the field to defend the run or screen passes.
Negative: Average size/speed numbers. Outmatched by opponents.
Analysis: Patterson was a consistent contributor on the Oregon defense and has definite possibilities as a dime back/special teams player at the next level. An underrated prospect, don't be surprised if Patterson finds a way to contribute at the next level.
