De'Anthony Thomas

School: Oregon
Position: RB
Positive: Three-year starter awarded varying degrees of all-America and all-conference honors since his freshman season. Struggled with an ankle injury last season, playing in just 10 games. Finished the season with 594 yards rushing and 8 TDs while adding 22 receptions, 246 yards, and 1 TD as a pass catcher. Also averaged 24.4 yards on 21 kick returns, bringing one back for a score. Sophomore totals included a career-best 701 yards rushing and 11 TDs. Athletic skill player who's a threat to score any time the ball is in his hands. Explosive, immediately gets to top speed, and possesses great playing speed. Quick, easily bounces around piles, or makes defenders miss. Fast in a straight line as well as laterally, and effortlessly beat opponents around the corner. Sidesteps defenders. Slippery and tough to catch. Dangerous if given the slightest bit of open room. Finds the clearing and possesses a tremendous burst. Loses no momentum altering his angle of attack or getting through the cutback lanes. Creative and finds ways to pick up yardage. Natural pass catcher out of the backfield.
Negative: Displays indecision carrying the ball. Not a strong ballcarrier, easily knocked off balance or brought down at the point by a single defender. May not have a true position at the next level. Does not play with much toughness.
Analysis: Thomas is a specialty skill player with the ability to break games open at running back, as a pass catcher, or a return specialist. He's not a system player, but rather a prospect who may need specific plays designed for him. If used properly Thomas will be a major asset for a creative offensive coordinator.
