A.J. McCarron

School: Alabama
Position: QB
Positive: Three-year starter awarded all-American and all-conference honors throughout his college career. Senior totals included 67.3% passing for 3063 yards and 28 touchdowns. Smart and accurate quarterback best as a game manager. Patient in the pocket, goes through progressions, and throws to check down targets if necessary. Effectively sets up screen passes, puts touch on the ball, and throws catchable passes. Buys time for receivers, precise with his short and intermediate passes, and places the ball where only his receiver can make catches. Effectively reads the defense, natural looking off the safety, and senses pressure then steps up to avoid the rush. Always in command of the offense, shows good timing on throws and puts air under deep passes.
Negative: Cannot drive long throws and deep passes hang in the air. Cannot zip the outs and high of the mark if he tries to put too much velocity on the ball. Adversely reacted to pressure last season and made some poor choices under the rush.
Analysis: McCarron was a terrific collegiate quarterback with a winning way and someone who, for the most part, stays away from mental mistakes. He possesses an average arm but McCarron could thrive in the NFL in the proper system where he's not asked to carry a team.
