Jonathan Newsome

School: Ball State
Position: OLB
Positive: Ohio State transfer who was started the past two seasons, winning all-Conference honors after each campaign. Athletic college defensive end who projects to outside linebacker. Quick off the snap, plays with good lean as well as balance and body control. Easily changes direction or immediately alters his angle of attack to pursue the action. Plays with leverage, fluid moving in space, and shows a good closing burst bearing down on the action. Rarely knocked off his feet.
Negative: Gets caught out of position and does not keep containment. Easily blocked by opponents. Should've been more productive on the college field.
Analysis: Newsome is an athletic defender who easily overmatched opponents on the small-conference level. He was solid but not as dominant as people expected and must now undergo a position change at the next level. Newsom is a natural pass rusher but must consistently play at a high level, and prove he can do more than make plays up the field.
