Yawin Smallwood

School: Connecticut
Position: ILB
Positive: Three-year starter who led Connecticut in tackles the past two seasons. Instinctive, patient linebacker with a good head for the ball. Quarterbacks the defense and makes sure his teammates are in proper position. Breaks down well, effectively uses his hands to protect himself, and displays solid range. Gets outside the numbers to make plays, relentless in pursuit, and constantly around the ball. Displays great awareness and also plays aggressive football. Takes good angles to the play and very efficient. Remains disciplined with assignments and does not bite on ball fakes.
Negative: Not fluid moving in reverse and will struggle in man coverage situations. Average playing speed.
Analysis: Smallwood was a force at Connecticut and a linebacker who rarely made mental mistakes. Not the greatest athlete, he quickly diagnoses the action and makes a lot of plays with his head. Smallwood offers starting potential on the inside of a 3-4 alignment.
