John Boyett

School: Oregon
Position: S
Bio: Three-year starter who played in just one game as a senior before having surgery to repair partial tears of both patella tendons. All-Conference selection as a junior in 2011 after totaling 108 tackles/1 interception/7 pass breakups. Sophomore totals of 2010 included 78/5/14, when he was awarded All-America and all-Conference honors. Freshman numbers included 90 tackles.
Positive: Energetic safety who plays beyond his physical ability. Instinctive, effectively reads plays and remains disciplined with assignments. Keeps the action front of him, stays focused, and sells out to make the play. Plays faster than his 40 time. Displays good speed in every direction, fires out to the flanks to help cornerbacks and quickly makes his way up the field defending the run. Consistently puts himself in a position to make plays on the ball and wraps up ballcarriers.
Negative: Lacks height and will be overmatched by big tight ends or taller receivers. Did not time well in the 40 prior to his knee injury. Better facing the action rather than playing in man coverage.
Analysis: Boyett was a consistent producer for Oregon and a dependable defender until his surgery last September. He's reminiscent of Jim Leonhard as Boyett is an overachiever effective in every area of the game. If Boyett returns to prior form and is placed in the proper system, he offers starting potential at the next level.
