Ryan Aplin

School: Arkansas State
Position: QB
Bio: Three-year starter named Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year last season after passing totals of 68%/3342 yards/24 TDs/4 interceptions as well as 438 yards rushing with six more scores. Junior passing totals included 63.9%/3588/19/16 when he also added a team-leading 588 yards rushing and 10 TDs. Initially awarded all-Conference honors as a sophomore when he passed for 3416 yards.
Positive: Small but tough quarterback with outstanding intangibles. Sells ball fakes, displays outstanding field vision, and quickly locates the open receiver. Makes good decisions in the pocket, knows where his receivers are, and shows timing on all his passes. Possesses a quick release. Accurate and puts the ball out in front of receivers, letting them run to the throw. Mobile, effective throwing on the move, and makes plays with his legs. Goes through receiver progressions and takes what the defense gives him.
Negative: Not a great downfield passer. Lacks pocket stature and classic size.
Analysis: Aplin was a productive college quarterback effective in all areas of the game. A true leader on the field, he stayed away from mental mistakes but lacks the size and arm strength to play at the next level. Aplin will get consideration in a West Coast or pistol offense, thanks to his accuracy and ability to make plays with his legs.
