Jake Johnson

School: South Alabama
Position: OLB
Bio: Virginia Tech transfer who started the past two seasons, winning all-Conference honors after each campaign. Senior totals included 131 tackles/15 tackles for loss/3 sacks after 83/6.5/2 the prior year.
Positive: Active and athletic linebacker with good instincts. Patient with assignments, remains disciplined, and flows well to the action. Breaks down well, fast moving laterally and keeps his feet and hands active throughout the play. Shows a good head for the ball. Plays to his 40 time and is effective in pursuit. Takes good angles to the play and is explosive at the point of attack.
Negative: Easily blocked from the action or gets caught up in the traffic. Not a forceful linebacker. Marginal skills in coverage.
Analysis: Johnson offers skill as a chase-and-run defender but must improve his play in pass coverage. He could make a roster as an eighth linebacker if he shows well on special teams.
