Joe Vellano

School: Maryland
Position: DT
Bio: Three-year starter awarded all-Conference honors since his sophomore campaign and named to numerous all-America teams in 2011. Senior totals included 69 tackles/14 tackles for loss/6 sacks after 94/7.5/2.5 as a junior.
Positive: Intense, high-revving defender who gets the most from his ability. Explodes off the snap with a terrific first step, displays a tremendous amount of quickness, and chases the action. Easily changes direction, slides down the line scrimmage, and tough to knock off his feet. Shows good awareness and quickly locates the ball.
Negative: Easily disrupted from plays by the initial block. Has size limitations and not very fast.
Analysis: Vellano was an overachiever at Maryland and consistently found ways to produce. He projects as a three-technique tackle and will get consideration in certain one-gap systems at the next level. His intensity and approach is infectious and could help Vellano snatch a roster spot this fall.
