Jared Smith

School: New Hampshire
Position: DT
Bio: Two-year starter awarded all-America and all-Conference honors as a senior after posting 40 tackles/10 tackles for loss/4 sacks. Junior numbers included 43/5.5/2.5, when he also blocked a kick. Started five games as a sophomore.
Positive: Hard-charging defensive lineman who projects as a 3-technique tackle at the next level. Plays with good pad level, gets leverage on opponents, and effectively uses his hands to protect himself. Fires off the snap with an explosive first step and easily changes direction. Shows terrific quickness, keeps his feet moving on contact, and finds ways to make plays. Stays with the action and chases hard.
Negative: Lacks bulk on the inside and can be controlled by a single blocker. More of a first-step lineman who must beat opponents off the snap. Must develop more moves with his hands.
Analysis: Smith has displayed a developing game the past three seasons and offers the skill as well as athleticism to be used as a one-gap penetrator on a four-man line.
