Matt Merletti

School: North Carolina
Position: S
Bio: Totaled 36 tackles/2 interceptions/1 pass breakups in eight starts last season before being sidelined with a sprained ligament in his left knee. Started five games as a junior and totaled 37/2/4. Missed the 2009 season after tearing a ligament in his right knee.
Positive: Hardworking safety who is best between the numbers. Plays smart football, takes proper angles to the action and displays a burst of speed. Effectively diagnoses plays, gives effort defending the run and wraps up when tackling. Best in zone coverage and works well with cornerbacks.
Negative: Lacks top sideline-to-sideline range and struggles getting outside the numbers to make plays. Possesses average ball skills. Injuries to both knees will throw up red flags.
Analysis: Merletti was a solid college defender who got the most from his ability. He could be used in a zone system and play special teams if his knees are able to pass NFL medical exams.
