Lavonte David

School: Nebraska
Position: OLB
Bio: Junior college transfer who led Nebraska in tackles the past two seasons, totaling 133 tackles/12 tackles for loss/5.5 sacks as a senior with two interceptions and two breakups. Set Nebraska's single-season record for tackles as a junior, finishing the season with 152/15/6. Also broke up 10 passes that season. Awarded all-conference honors the past two years, named to numerous All-American teams and named Big Ten Linebacker of the Year in 2011.
Positive: Tough, instinctive linebacker who makes plays sideline to sideline. Remains disciplined with assignments, displays good awareness on the field and consistently puts himself in a position to make plays on the ball. Can run downfield with tight ends, covers a lot of area on the field and is fast out to the flanks. Scrapes well laterally and shows a burst of speed getting to the ball handler. Uses his hands exceptionally well to protect himself. Displays a terrific first step to the action. Wraps up when tackling. Sells out in order to make plays.
Negative: Lacks size and overmatched by opponents. Not a strong tackler with the ability to bring ballcarriers down on initial contact. Swallowed up by blocks and struggles getting through the trash.
Analysis: David is a terrific football player with a complete game, but has size limitations. He possesses all the attributes and intangibles coaches want in a starting linebacker yet is a scheme specific player. David will be very effective in a one gap system and will also be an asset on special teams.
