Bio: Three-year starter awarded all-Conference honors the past two seasons. Senior totals included 31/7/4 after he had 29/6/3 the prior year.
Positive: Tall, athletic defender with outstanding measurables. Plays with terrific pad level and leverage then quickly gets his hands up to protect himself. Fluid changing direction, keeps his feet moving, and easily alters his angle of attack. Shows strength and the ability to hold his ground against offensive tackles. Remains disciplined with assignments and does more than just rush up the field. Makes some very athletic plays on film.
Negative: Lacks top first-step quickness off the snap. Does not play to his measurables or speed. Must develop more moves getting off blocks.
Analysis: McCarthy very much looks the part and occasionally plays to it. He's a developmental player with outstanding skills but will need time to improve his game.
