Armanti Edwards

School: Appalachian State
Position: WR
Bio: Four-year starter awarded varying degrees of All-Conference and all-American honors since his freshman season. Two-time winner of the Walter Payton Award in 2008 and 2009, given annually to the nation's top FCS football player. Passing totals last season included 68%/3291/12/7, when he also added 679 yards rushing with 18 touchdowns. Junior passing totals included 64.1%/2902/30/9 and a team-leading 941 yards and 13 touchdowns on the ground.
Positive: Accomplished college signal caller who projects to either receiver or running back at the next level. Possesses a good arm, powers the ball into pass catchers, and displays speed on all throws. Improved as a passer last season, did a nice job looking off the safety, and has a sense of where his receivers are on the field. Possesses a quick release and the ball immediately gets out of his hands. Patient in the pocket, buys time for receivers, and has the ability to elude defenders, scrambling around the pocket. Slips defenders outside the pocket, shows a burst of speed and the ability to create yardage carrying the ball. Does a terrific job commanding the offense. Tough as a passer or ball carrier and works as hard to be productive.
Negative: Displays poor accuracy as a quarterback and sprays his passes around. Constantly has receivers adjusting backwards or getting vertical to catch the ball. Lacks stature in the pocket and must get to the outside to give himself a better view of the field.
Analysis: Edwards was a record-setting quarterback at Appalachian State and a true leader on the field. He lacks the stature and passing accuracy to play quarterback in the NFL yet does enough things well that he'll get consideration in camp this summer. In many ways reminds us of the New York Jets Brad Smith.
