Kyle McCarthey

School: Notre Dame
Position: S
Bio: Full-time starter the past two seasons after seeing extensive action with the first team as a sophomore. Led the team in tackles as a senior, posting 101/5/5 after junior totals of 110/2/1.
Positive: Small yet ferocious safety who attacks ball-carriers. Effectively reads and diagnoses the action, physical in all aspects of the game, and works hard to get involved in the play. Remains disciplined with assignments, very instinctive, and shows a closing burst bearing down on the action. Displays good route recognition in zone and fights hard to break up passes.
Negative: Loses momentum when he must immediately change direction or alter his angle of attack. Possesses marginal ball skills and struggles in man coverage assignments. Does not display great speed to the flanks.
Analysis: McCarthey is a hard-hitting safety best playing between the numbers and downhill. Lacks classic size at strong safety yet has the approach that should make and successful at the position.
