The first day of practice at the Shrine Game is always an easy one; players in shorts and often times wearing no shoulder pads, so only limited knowledge is to be gained. Yet there is plenty of buzz in the lobby of the Tradewinds Island Grand Resort, the home base for the first of the two big post-season bowl games.
The lobby of the Tradewinds Resort is swarming with scouts interviewing players and the Tennessee Titans have the most on hand. One curious interview that went on for a long, long time was between the New England Patriots and UMass tight end Emil Igwenagu. We hear the Pats, who are loaded at the tight end position, are looking at the UMass senior as a fullback- a position he’s projected to by a number of teams.
As far as the initial two practices, the players that looked “good” included Brandon Brooks/OL/Miami-Oh, Thomas Mayo/WR/Cal-Pa and Tyrone Crawford/DE/Boise State. Bryon Coleman/QB/UT-Chattanooga threw the ball well.
Jarius Wright/WR/Arkansas, struggled throughout the day.
Many in attendance think Mike Adams/T/Ohio State, will go much higher than he’s presently projected. How high? Though we don’t share the opinion I am hearing anywhere from the middle of round one, on. Adams is slated to play in the Senior Bowl next week.
Additional sources here at the Tradewinds confirmed our report from Friday that a number of teams presently rate Kendall Wright/WR/Baylor over Justin Blackmon. The list of teams that have Wright over his Big 12 counterpart is either growing or was underestimated by myself last week.
Separate sources on hand, not affiliated with the Senior Bowl, told me Nick Toon/WR/Wisconsin is definitely out of next weeks event. I am still searching for further confirmation at this point. Rishard Matthews/WR/Nevada is definitely out of the Senior Bowl with an injury. As we posted on twitter earlier, we were told Michael Floyd/WR/Notre Dame will not play either.
Thus far I’ve been told two replacement receiver invited are Gerell Robinson of Arizona State and TJ Graham of North Carolina State.
